What Is Saint Patrick’s Day?

Before we dive into this article, it's important to understand what Saint Patrick's Day is and why we celebrate it. St Patrick's Day is sometimes called the feast of Saint Patrick. It is a cultural and religious holiday that commemorates the death of Saint Patrick of Ireland. Folks both Irish and non-Irish celebrate by wearing green and enjoying classic Brews of Ireland, such as Guinness beer.

By wearing green on this special day, It is believed that you will avoid getting pinched by a leprechaun. The color green is said to be invisible to leprechauns, so make sure to gather your gear before the big event!

Baltimore’s St. Patrick Parade

One of the biggest events that happens annually on March 17th, is Baltimore's St Patrick parade. This event has been taking place for more than 60 years and brings together thousands of spectators who watch the spectacle go up and down the streets of the city. The parade kicks off at the Washington Monument and proceeds down to Market Place.

If you have children or loved ones who have never experienced a parade before, this is surely a spectacle to see! Classic bagpipes and Irish music will be played, along with a twist of both religious and cultural representation.

Shamrock Race

For those who prefer to get their sweat on versus hitting the taproom, the Shamrock 5K race is a great opportunity to get moving and celebrate at the same time. Better yet, the Shamrock 5K race starts right before the Baltimore St Patrick parade, so you don't have to choose between events! If you are only choosing to view the parade, however, be sure to get down to the Washington Monument prior to race time, which is traditionally at 1:00 p.m.

Irish Bar Hopping

If you are traveling with a big group, going Irish bar hopping on St Patrick's Day is one of the most festive activities you can take part in. Luckily, Baltimore is home to an abundance of Irish breweries and pubs, offering a selection of Irish brews and bites. You can grab a ticket to the Baltimore Shamrock stroll St. Patrick's Day Weekend Bar Crawl for a coordinated day of events, or bar hop on your own time and visit establishments of your choosing.
