6 Tips For Moving With Pets

6 Tips For Moving With Pets

Moving is always a pain, no matter what your situation! From sifting through old belongings to carrying heavy furniture pieces, it can be a stressful day. Managing your pets in the mix can only exacerbate this. Just as moving can be stressful for humans, it can be equally as disruptive for pets in this article, we will explore top tips you can follow when relocating with your furry friend.

#1 - Maintain Routine

As best you can, try to maintain some kind of routine for your pet. For example, if you always take your pet out for a morning walk to start the day, continue to do so! You should also be sure to keep feeding times consistent and give them the same amount of outdoor and indoor exposure that they are used to. Not only will this help them stay on track, but it will also help you maintain some sort of structure as you navigate the chaotic moving process.

#2 - Create a Safe Space

When our belongings are in disarray, it can be difficult to find a calm and focused space. This is why creating a safe space for your pet is so important, so they can feel grounded and secure in their new environment. Dedicate a corner of your new space to making your pet feel at home. This can be laying down their favorite blanket, setting up a bed, or collecting their toys in a specific area that they know is sacred to them.

#3 - Minimize Stress During Transit

Transit can be especially stressful, especially if your pet experiences car sickness or fear of flying. The bottom line is that traveling can be uncomfortable for pets as it disrupts their typical everyday routine. Try to minimize stress during transit by taking breaks, and investing in quality travel equipment for your furry friend.

#4 - Gradual Introductions

If you are lucky enough to experience a slow move, try to grant exposure to your new space piece by piece to your furry friend. Bring your pet over for a preliminary visit to walk around the area and sniff things out. You can also take them for a walk around your property to get them used to a new environment and routine.

#5 - Keep Their Environment Consistent

When it comes to moving with pets, keeping their environment as consistent as possible is key. This means eliminating loud noises if they are used to a home, purchasing similar pet furniture for them to enjoy, and keeping things like food and treats consistent.

#6 - Reestablish Routine

As soon as you move into your new space, make it a priority to reestablish routine with your pet. Moving is extremely time-consuming, and there are not always enough hours in the day to complete our typical routine tasks. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, you are doing the best you can! Make it a priority to work with your pet to reestablish their new routine and encourage yourself to be flexible alongside them.
