Getting Ready For a Move: What To keep, What To Sell, What To Trash

Getting Ready For a Move: What To keep, What To Sell, What To Trash

Fall is here, and for many, that means the start of a new lease or journey of moving into a new home. As you pack up your belongings to prepare for your next place, deciding what to keep, sell, and throw away can be a grueling process. That’s why we are here to help you make this process a little less daunting so that you only take what you need to your next home.

What To Keep

With that being said, let’s begin by identifying items you should keep!

Essentials & Sentimental Items

Essentials and sentimental items should absolutely follow you to your next home. This can include things like utensils, cooking appliances, expensive furniture, and decorative pieces you have invested in. This also goes for sentimental items, too. Try to keep all of your sentimental items together in a secure box or envelope to ensure that these special items do not get lost in the moving process.

High-Value Items

High-value items are another category that should be kept for your next home. High-value items include fine china and cookware, expensive kitchen devices, electronics, and anything you have saved up for. Even if you are unsure about it, let the price tag tell you whether or not you should keep it!

What To Sell

Now that you know what to keep for your next space, it is time to talk about items that are worth trying to sell. A great way to get a bit more money back on your previous purchase!

Items You Have Outgrown

Items that you have outgrown can easily be sold on sites such as Poshmark or Facebook Marketplace. You can even list your items on local buy-and-sell groups to save on shipping costs and offer your items to someone in the area. Things you may have outgrown could be clothing, shoes, or accessories you no longer have a taste for.

Unwanted Gifts

Have you received any unwanted gifts recently? Likely, you don’t want these items taking up valuable space in your moving boxes as you transition to your next home. Unwanted gifts can be resold, even anonymously! If these items are new with tags or in completely unopened boxes, then you have an even higher likelihood of selling.

What To Trash

Let’s face it — some items will just not quite make the cut as you transition to your new space. Let’s take a look at items you should consider throwing away or donating.

Broken Items

Anything that is broken beyond repair should be tossed as you are packing. Remember, moving into a new home is a lot of work, so be honest with yourself about what kind of extra projects you are likely to do once you get there! Fixing a broken or electronic might not be at the top of your list.

Expired Products

Moving is a great time to also assess your pantry items and bath products and throw out anything old or expired. Make sure to check the expiration dates on packaged foods as well as cosmetics, so that you can ensure a fresh start in your new space.

We hope this article will inspire you to be tactical about your upcoming move. Congratulations on your new space, and be sure to check out the rest of our blog for more helpful tips along the way!
